my roommate forced me to write a text about myself in the third person... very weird... here it is:
Eloi Sànchez Rivas is a designer currently focused on space and urban practices. He understands design as a universal and potentially informal tool capable of gathering and creating knowledge, through community empowerment and co-creation.
He graduated with honors in 2022 from the Elisava University School of Design and Engineering, space design field. He currently works in Queralt Suau studio and as a researcher and professor at the Elisava university.
academic profile and experiences
His early education explored both plastic and performing arts. He trained in acting at the Teatre Jardí and El Galliner Theater Training Center, 2016 where he co-founded a critical theater company called Log Out Teatre, with four productions to date.
At the same time, he studied for his baccalaureate in plain arts, graduating with tuition 2018 which granted him a scholarship for his university studies in Design and Innovation at Elisava, University School of Design and Engineering.
During his university academic period, 2022 he explored design as a tool for activism and the creation of cultural content in different formats. From audiovisual, presenting at the Fundació Miró 2021 within the BARK Festival. He also explored the performative format, participating in the Spring School program of the BodySpace course at the Bauhaus University of Weimar, 2022 through an Erasmus scholarship. He looked into several other formal languages until reaching the format closest to his current practices, within the ephemeral architecture field, exhibiting at the Llum Barcelona 2021 festival or collaborating with the Digital and Democratic Innovation Athenaeum, 2020 in the Meridiana Canòdrom with an installation for Decidim Barcelona.
He also worked as an intern for half a year at the Grarcés de Seta Bonet architecture studio, 2020 approaching the more permanent language of his academic studios.
He finished his university studies in 2022, being awarded an ei! prize for the best academic record of his promotion. He also received two other ei! awards for his final degree project, A peu de carrer, in the categories of Social and Public’s favorite.
Eloi currently works at Elisava's Research, 2023 in the Design for City Making Lab led by Roger Páez. DxCM is an urban design research laboratory that fosters social innovation and a broad exploration of the Collaborative City scenario working with different civic organizations, public institutions and private companies.
He combines his research work with teaching at Elisava in matters of space design and interventions, 2023 leading workshops with institutions such as the Poliorama Theatre and URBASER.
At de same time he works in Queralt Suau, 2023 an architecture studio that explores transversal formats based on the interaction between space, time and narrative. Working arround design exhibitions, scenic spaces, and interventions in the city with permanent and temporary installations, through play, critical and strategic thinking or itinerant exhibitive formats.
Eloi Sànchez actively participates in neighborhood associations that advocate for housing rights and against the city as a hostile and speculative environment, working for an urban environment made by and for its neighbors.
He is also exploring domesticity and dwelling furniture as active tools in the city, 2023 through the Design for Habitat postgraduate course at Elisava, scholarshiped through one of the ei! awards.
